VISUAL ART
Introduction to Studio Art
In this course, we will gain an introductory understanding of art through the exploration of materials and the practicing of art skills. As we master these materials and skills, we will develop a better understanding of ourselves as artists who utilize the elements of art and the principles of design for personal expression. We will also connect our work in the classroom studio to a larger context through the study of art and crafts of varied world cultures, including our own.
In this course, we will expand on our understanding of art through further exploration of 3-D materials (cardboard, found materials, clay, etc) and the practicing of art skills. As we master these materials and skills, we will learn to develop a better understanding of ourselves as artists who utilize the elements of art and the principles of design for 3-dimensional artistic expression. We will also connect our work in the classroom studio to a larger context through the study of sculpture, installation art and 3 dimensional art and artists.

MUSIC
The Music program at HSPS is at the forefront of Music Education. Our Music Program is one of the first four schools in the country to receive the J. Dilla Music Tech Grant from the VH1 Save the Music Foundation and has partnerships with Carnegie Hall, 92nd Street Y, and Soundtrap. Our program has also been visited by major musical artists, such as DJ Khaled and Juke Ross.
Courses offered include: (1) Introduction to Music, (2) Band, and (3) Chorus.
DRAMA
The Drama program at HSPS is one of our most popular programs, offering a drama course: Introduction to Acting Performance. However, through a partnership with MCC Theater, we offer an after-school drama program in which students learn all aspects of theatrical performance. Additionally, MCC Theater Company’s teaching artists push into our 9th and 10th grade Social Studies courses to infuse history with theatrical performance. Moreover, our students have pursued internships at Off-Broadway and Broadway theaters. Our Drama program is also part of the Prospero Digital Theatre with C&T Theatre out of the United Kingdom.
Here are some samples of student work:
Through individual and group exercises, improvisations, monologues and scene studies, this class, eclectic in method, helps students develop their acting potential and sharpen their skills in interpreting scripts. Previous theatre study is not required.
Classes will be tailored to the specific needs of the students, some of whom may be somewhat experienced and some of whom will have no experience.
This is a project-based, studio-style PERFORMANCE class in which active participation is crucial. It is NOT a class for people who want to read about different acting techniques and approaches. It is a class for someone who will learn by doing, someone who is willing to invest fully in the exercises, someone who is willing to put in time outside of class to work on material. It is really the only way that one can feel and experience for themselves what acting requires and get the most out of the class. All work will be focused on performance or playwriting projects.
